NASA’s first female launch director launched her first-ever mission this week, making history around the globe.

With the words “go for launch” Charlie Blackwell-Thompson sent the Artemis on its journey to the moon and, as it rocketed through the sky, thousands of little girls everywhere dreamt of going to space.

At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on launch day, 30 per cent of the engineers in the firing room were women.

The series of  Artemis missions will also mark the first time a woman and the first time a person of colour will step on the surface of the Moon.

It’s a far cry from the days portrayed in the award-winning movie Hidden Figures.
