Bruce Lehrmann may face another trial after the first, in which he is accused of sexual intercourse without consent, collapsed sensationally on Thursday.
The trial was aborted after it was found that a jury had brought research papers into the jury room.
Afterwards, Brittany Higgins made an emotional speech outside the courtroom in which she thanked supporters and criticised the process she had been through.
In her statement, Higgins said her life had been “completely scrutinised, open for the world to see”, while making criticisms of the accused’s right to silence (although this is the accused’s right in criminal cases).
While her full speech is available on Youtube, Higgins’ comments have been referred by Lehrmann’s lawyers to the police in the event they may amount to contempt of court.
Higgins also thanked “the people of Australia who have rallied behind me”.
