Julia Gillard calls out sexism when it happens

In an interview with  ABC Radio Adelaide's Breakfast program, the nation's only female prime minister has expressed her opinion on where women are at, 10 years on from her landmark misogyny speech.

As is her style, Julia Gillard didn’t hold back on her assessment.

"I'm always anxious to see more (progress for women), so in some ways I guess my surprise is, 'Why aren't we further along?' given how long we've been talking about gender equality," she said.

"There are still barriers there — I mean, it's not easy from the perspective of work and family life."

"Social media continues to be a vile sewer of misogyny, so there are still things to do."

She did point to the election of “teal independents” shaped by women’s voices and policies as progress.

But she also has urged all women to call out sexism when it happens.
